Steve Robinson is a kiln-formed glass artist, working with glass enamels – a technique in which he has specialised since graduating in Glass from the University of Wolverhampton in the 1990s as a mature student. “Over the past couple of years since moving to Devon, whenever we’ve had chance we’ve enjoyed many family walks on Dartmoor and are gradually getting familiar with what is a surprisingly vast area – with lots to discover.
In particular I am intrigued by the fascinating granite rock formations known as the Tors. Over lockdown I began studying these fantastic structures more closely, and developing a new collection of work.
I’m using a ‘mosaic’ style to represent the interlocking rock forms. I individually cut, shape and colour each piece, adding extra texture with my flatbed diamond grinder, and then reassemble them a bit like a jigsaw. The result is tactile and adds a three-dimensional element.”
