Janie Ramsay is a potter based in Devon.
Taking inspiration from the local Dartmoor landscape as well as the human form and face, she makes stoneware vessels and sculptural pieces.
Working with a variety of hand building techniques, she decorates her pieces using resist methods with slips and oxides, rarely glazing them. She then polishes the work with beeswax polish. She fires her pieces many times to achieve the surface texture she requires, taking the work up to a temperature of approximately 1180 – 1200 degrees in the final firing. She sometimes smoke fires the pieces finding the immediacy and unpredictability of this technique very exciting and challenging.
